Will you believe that there is much precious metals that go into the electronics we use everyday. In fact, for every million cellphones manufactured and processed, there are more than 17 tons of copper and a whooping 1/3 of a ton of silver can be recovered from e-waste, in addition to the other precious metals being used like gold and palladium.
In this regard, we can somehow compute or predict when will those major resources like rare earth metals will run out of supply due to our thirst for high-tech colourful glowy gadgets. They maybe scarce or not, these rare elements have become big business and have sparked and inspired the start-up and launching of a plenty of companies focused in mining for these metals.
The recent report by Apple company stated that 4 million iPhone 6 preorders were placed within the first 24 hours. The fast-growth of market for smartphone from other brand like Samsung, Lenovo, Asus, Sony and Nokia adds to the concern.
For this reason, you can be sure that the chemistry of smartphones will only become more complex as advanced materials and technology increasingly find their ways into our hands.
The Chemistry of Smartphones
Are you aware of the chemistry behind smartphones ? Ever wondered on some of the concepts of what is behind the touchscreen of a smartphone ? Are you interested in getting really deep into the mechanics of the smartphone and battery technology ?
Smartphones are now everywhere. We now live in a world full of them and you can basically research anything and everything about smartphones.
The Battery
Most phones use lithium ion batteries. These batteries contain lithium cobalt oxide as the positive electrode. Lithium-ion batteries are lighter than most rechargeable batteries. The electrodes are constructed of lightweight lithium & carbon. Lithium is a highly reactive element. Lithium batteries lose only 5% of their charge each month. Has no memory effect. Don’t have to use all the battery before recharging although they start to break down as soon as they leave the factory. These batteries lasts 2 to 3 years from manufacture date
They are extremely sensitive to high temperatures since heat makes the batteries to break down even faster . Also, DO NOT use the battery until it is dead since the battery will be completely ruined and you won’t be able to use it anymore. And there is a chance that the battery will explode if the battery pack fails
The battery packs can come in all shapes and sizes
On the inside of a battery pack you will find lithium ion cells which look an awful lot like AA battery cells unless you get a square or rectangular battery cell. There is a couple of temperature sensors, a voltage converter & regulator circuit, which maintains safe levels of voltage & current
The battery has a metal casing which contains three long spirals of thin sheets. There is a positive electrode made of lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) and a negative electrode made of carbon. And a separator, a micro perforated plastic that eparates the positive and negative electrodes that allows ions to pass
On the inside the sheets are submerged in the organic solvent Ether. It is the most common of the organic solvents that are used. The solvents act as the electrolyte. When the battery charges the ions of lithium move through the electrolyte towards the negative electrode from the positive electrode. Then they move back towards the positive electrodes when the battery is being drained.
The Electronics
Elements that are used are Copper, Silver, Gold, Tantalum, Copper, Silver, and Gold are used for wiring, whilst copper, gold, and silver are made into micro electrical components. Tantalum is used as a main component for micro capacitors Nickel, Dysprosium, Praseodymium, Terbium, Neodymium, Gadolinium, Nickel is found in the microphones and other electrical connections . Neodymium, Gadolinium and Praseodymium are used in the magnets which are found in the speaker and microphone Terbium, Neodymium and Dysprosium are found in the vibration unit. Silicon, Oxygen, Antimony, Arsenic, Phosphorus, Gallium. Silicon is made into the chip in the phone and exposed to Oxygen and heat. It creates a layer of silicon dioxide on the surface. These bits of the layer will be taken off to allow a current of electricity to flow. Silicon can’t conduct electricity without other elements . There are different semiconductors for each different element that is used . The Tin and Lead are being used to solder the electronics and chip pieces together. Now days they use a combination of tin, silver, and copper as a lead free replacement
Chemistry's Role
The Chemistry of touchscreen technology is very wide and vast. When I started this project I didn’t realize how many things there were in one little smartphone. However I was able to find lots of sources that helped! The first thing that you see chemistry being involved would be the screen. Inside the screen there are different elements that are used to produce the variety of different colors that you see. Another huge thing that the smartphone contains would be the variety of elements. For example when they solder the pieces together they use a combination of tin, silver, and copper so they heat up the elements to create the solder metal. Another example of chemistry at work in a smartphone would be the chip. Not only is the chip made of 100% silicon but when it is exposed to oxygen and heat it then undergoes a chemical reaction and creates a layer of silicon dioxide which doesn’t allow electricity to pass through. So they scrape some bits of ot to allow electricity to pass through certain spots as needed. However the one thing that used the most chemistry would be the battery. In the battery there is a thin sheet of Lithium Cobalt Oxide or LiCoO2. Which is the chemical bonding of lithium, cobalt, and oxygen. Plus there is another sheet which is made of carbon and a separator sheet. All of these are fully submerged in an organic solvent where they work together and hold electricity.
Smartphone Chemistry:
There are 70 out of the 83 elements on the periodic table that can be found in your smartphone. Smartphones may contain up to 62 different types of metals. Rare earth metals such as scandium, yttrium, and elements 57-71. One single iPhone could contain 8 different rare-earth metals. You could find 16 of the 17 rare-earth metals if you examine several varieties of smartphones. Dysprosium and neodymium cause your smartphones to vibrate. Dysprosium and neodymium are contained in magnets in your smartphones.
Smartphone’s Display :
The screens of smartphones were designed to be tough. Actually it was the result of a serendipitous accident. A chemist accidentally heated a sample of glass to 900 degrees C then he dropped it onto the floor and it bounced instead of breaking. Hence was created the world’s first synthetic glass-ceramic
Synthetic glass-ceramic shares lots of similar properties with glass and ceramic. Glass is actually a formless solid, because it lacks a crystalline structure. The glass molecules aren’t in any type of form the are arranged more like a liquid yet frozen in place. Since glass does not contain atoms by which they cannot slip by each other this causes stress since there is no way to relieve this stress it forms a crack when excessive stress is placed on it.
Ceramics’ molecules however are often characterized by ionic bonds, even though they can also contain covalent bonds. Because of the extremely strong bonds between the molecules it makes it difficult for the planes to slip past each other. They resist compression but can break if bent. The combination of glass and ceramics creates a more tougher and stronger type of material. This material can be made by overheating the glass, so that a portion of the glass is transformed into a fine-grained crystalline material
It is extremely heat resistant. Glass-ceramics aka: vitroceramic, is a controlled crystallization of certain glasses. Sometimes it is induced by nucleating additives.
What is Behind a Touchscreen
There are two basic categories of touchscreens.
First is the resistive touchscreens. They can be touched with any type of material and still work. Like the ATM, or the little machine at the checkout counter where you sign your name for the credit card you use. They are made of two layers of conductive materials. When you touch a resistive screen the screen actually bends and touches the other layer so it connects the circuit. The software recognizes the change in the current at the point of contact and responds by carrying out the action that corresponds with that spot. This are also known as pressure-sensitive screens. ONLY one button can be pressed at once, if more than one is pressed at once then the software won’t respond
Second is the capacitive touchscreens. Since glass is an insulator it cannot conduct electricity. Even though glass has ions they are locked into place which stops the electricity from flowing through . It must be coated with a thin layer of a conductive substance such as Indium tin oxide which placed into a crisscrossing pattern. Because your finger has an electrical charge, when you touch the screen the charge from your finger connects with the screen’s charge the software reacts to the voltage drop.
Gallium, Arsenic, Lead and tin? The American Chemical Society has produced a video titled “What’s in your iPhone?” that explains the details that some of the chemical elements used to make smartphones.
Check it out :
To think that a small device contains that many components inside not only that for it to have half of the elements in the periodic table is quite impressive but even its surprising for it to have that many components the durability of the smartphone doesn’t satisfy me, first of all the battery of a smart is highly sensitive and it can be really hazardous if not take care of it properly next the heated glass of the smart phone can’t be shattered but it can break ones it is given enough stress and last wasting all of those precious metals just to make a smartphone with an insufficient durability/life span is truly a waste products like these should contain a small amount of materials because it’s not important sure we use smartphones to sustain our daily lives but wasting those precious materials that can be used for more advance technologies isn’t worth it.

There are an isolated few graphics online that look at elements involved in the manufacture of a smartphone but there actually remarkably little easily accessible information out there that details the specific compounds used for specific purposes in mobile phones this probably isnt surprising since these details are probably kept under the lock and key of patent laws and the like however I tried my best with this graphic to provide a little more detail about specific uses an undertaking that took a lot more effort than I initially expected

ReplyDeleteNowadays, we can’t deny the fact that the smartphones are part of our lives . You would have needed a whole bank of computers on an entire floor of an office building to do what you are able to do with a single smartphone today. But did you know that there are several chemical elements that are used to make a simple smartphone, including copper, silver, gold, tantalum etc. And every time you use your smartphone, you are putting chemistry into action. Smartphone technology is evolving at a dizzying pace. You can now use your smartphone to check your blood sugar, adjust your home’s thermostat, and start your car. Twenty years ago, no one envisioned that people would someday take more pictures with their cell phones than with their stand-alone cameras. It is anyone’s guess what will come next. Thanks to the intersection of chemistry and innovation, the possibilities are limitless.

Chemistry role is having really great impact now especially what else it can do in the future. For the most part, smartphones have many elements internally or externally possess to brings us safe, efficient, and productivity uses. If one or more smartphones is not working anymore, then some part of it could be get which it'll reuse to repair other damage phones and recycling it to lessen the disposal of a phones especially have batteries and lessen the impact to our environment.

Smartphones are made up of around 30 elements, including copper, gold and silver for wiring and lithium and cobalt in the battery. The bright colours of the display are produced by small amounts of rare earth elements, including yttrium, terbium and dysprosium. Touch screen are manufactured mainly from aluminosilicate glass, a mixture of aluminium oxide and silicon dioxide, which is then placed in a hot bath of molten salt. The purpose of this is to allow smaller sodium ions to leave the glass and larger potassium ions to take their place. For battery majority of today’s phones use lithium ion batteries. These batteries tend to use lithium cobalt oxide as the positive electrode in the battery (though other transition metals are sometimes used in place of cobalt).

Most phones or devices use lithium ion batteries these batteries use lithium cobalt oxide as a positive electrode. The batteries last 2 to 3 years from the date of operation of the highly sensitive ones. this is at high temperatures because the heat makes the batteries break even faster and there is a chance the battery will explode if the battery fails.

The article stated that in an single smart phones there are several rare metals, as a students i am concerned about the metals because for some reasons, rare metals must be kept because it is hard to find and maybe they are only of them left in earth. The best thing to do is to minimize the production of mobile phones per year, some of them could release a smart phone once a year not every quarter or every month. Manufacturer can also lessen the elements that they need to build an smartphone, we must conserve every single elements and every single rare metals that we have in this earth.
There's a chemistry behind a cell phone, first the battery most phones use lithium molecule batteries. These batteries contain lithium cobalt oxide as the positive cathode. ReplyDeleteThis article showed us the different components that completed a smartphone. It is amazing to know that a single smartphone contains 70 out of the 83 elements found in a periodic table. Our world today is almost worked by a smartphone but it might be a result of scarcity in those elements because of the huge demand. As a student, I want to advice everyone to obtain only what we need and not what we want because if we continue that kind of practices, we can lost most of our resources. Our surroundings are worked by chemistry and if we will not value the elements that helped us to reach progress, the day will come that we will be stuck because we don't have enough resources to discover, innovate and create new technologies.

Cellphones really changed our lives, we are not just aware that most of the elements were present in our mobile phones even those rare once were present, although those precious metals may run out of supply because some people wanted fancy or fashionable phones. Smartphones are everywhere, we admit that we can't live without phones specially in our generation. Our mobile phones uses lithium ion batteries that can possibly explode if the battery pack fails, it also have lithium cobalt oxide that allows ions to pass. The screen contains different elements that produce the colors that we see and the chip of our phones which is made up of silicon. In simple words our mobile phones include most of the elements that are present in the periodic table. So we must take good care of it and protect it as much as possible.
Technology like smartphone is changing the world. It is very handy and easy to use and that's why it is in demand by a lot of people all over the world. Smartphones are made up of 70 out of the 83 elements on the periodic table and I was amazed when I read this in the article. Smartphone helps me as a student because I can get a lot of information and I can also communicate with my loved ones with the use of this. But, on the other hand, I'm worried because of the technology advancement. The precious elements used to create smartphones are not an infinite source so we should also consider our environment before we innovate what we want.

Smartphone and technologies have different roles and varieties of our life, especially for professionals and students. It enables us to do our tasks efficiently and makes our day productively. According to the article that I have read, smartphones have different kinds of elements from the periodic table that enables it to work effectively. A smartphone is consists of 70 out of 80 elements which also have advantages and disadvantages for our body that can make our technology world worst. Personally speaking, I've felt surprised and worried at the same time because technology is widely known and acceptable around the world that can use by different kinds of people which can lead us to different kinds of disaster but technology has also had an advantage for students, it improves our knowledge and it develops students' higher-order thinking skills. I've also felt surprised because we didn't know that the thing that we can take anywhere has lots of chemistry related to it especially the elements on the periodic table. The small electronic chips and materials that a smartphone has are not eco-friendly which can damage nor destroy our environment, we should always consider and know some information about the small things it consists to save our environment before getting into the most reliable thing that we can use to make our life easier and fluent by using smartphones.

The various components required to make a cell phone work come from different places all over the world. In fact, according to the article above, a smart phone consist of many elements.
ReplyDeleteAmong the chemical elements use in smart phones are copper, gold and silver for wiring, lithium and cobalt in the battery and aluminum, silicon, oxygen and potassium in the glass screen.
It is really amazing to know that most of the elements found in the periodic table of elements can only be found in one gadget and that is a smartphone. That simple gadget for communication has been made complicatedly successful due to the presence of elements. It;s part from the smallest part of the inside part to the covering material of the phone is made because of elements.
The bright colors of the display produced by small amounts of rare earth elements including Yttrium, Terbium and Dysprosium.
So whenever we use our cellphones we should be thankful to those scientists who invented or discovered these elements that are being use to make communication possible and easier.
Smartphones are not simply made so we have to take good care of our cellphones because it pass through a very complicated processes.

We should have proper knowledge about our smartphones' materials so that we are aware of do's and dont's. I've learned that our smartphones have their metals inside that help them to function. The different parts of the phone have different kinds of metals that are in our periodic table. the first information that they stated is that the battery of the phone (mostly lithium-ion) has a metal casing containing three long thin sheet spirals. There is a positive lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) electrode and a negative carbon electrode. According to them, the screen of the phone must be covered with a thin layer of a conductive material, such as Indium tin oxide, which is put in a crisscrossing pattern. Because your finger has an electrical load when you touch the screen, the load from your finger attaches to the screen. This article gives us knowledge about the materials inside our smartphone. One of these is Tantalum, which is used as the main component of micro capacitors Nickel, Dysprosium, Praseodymium, Terbium, Neodymium, Gadolinium, and other electrical connections. Nickel is used in microphones and other electrical connections. Neodymium, Gadolinium, and Praseodymium are used in the speaker magnets and Terbium, Neodymium, and Dysprosium microphones are used in the vibration systems. To sum it all up, our smartphones have a lot of connections in chemistry. Chemistry contributed a lot to making a smartphone. But with the new technological advancements, it has just proved how much technology has evolved to a certain extent that we can carry a periodic table's worth of elements at our pockets. 50 years ago, I don't think noone would have dreamt that we have found technologies small and simple as a smartphone looks but as complex as recent technology goes.

I was amazed after I read the article, I learned a lot of things.I found out that even such a little smartphone contains a lot of elements in periodic table , majority of them is connected on chemistry. Imagine the 70 elements out of 83 elements in periodic table can be found in a smartphone....Elements that has something to do with the screen, makes a variety of elements and the chip in our smartphones which is made of 100% silicon and if its exposed in oxygen chemical reactions will occur which will create a layer of silicon dioxide that doesn't allow electricity to pass through so they decided to submerged in an organic solvent where they can work together and hold electricity which is good.A rare-earth metals elements can be found in our smartphones too, especially the iphone that contains 8 diff. rare-earth materials.
There's a lot of elements who has their specific use inside a smartphone and I was amazed by it and with everything.

What I'm saying is making smartphones alone is an improbable decision of us to do because those earth elements can also be used to make different products to better help us humans.

These days, cellphones can be found just about anywhere you look. It has been such a commodity that almost everyone is expected to own one, but owning one isn't the same as knowing how it works. The article delves into the topic of the chemistry of cellphones, meaning what it's main parts are and what they're made of and how they tick. Starting with the lithium-ion battery, it utilizes the elements on the periodic table, although combustible when certain requirements are met, it is counteracted by other elements that suppress the combustible aspect. And finally for the electronics, it uses the elements Copper, Silver, Gold, Tantalum. Through these elements it allows your phone to do the things it does, although it isn't as simple as that, as some of these elements serve as a catalyst for other elements

In our modern generation, technology is everywhere, almost of us are already had a smartphones even the childrens are already had a gadgets. Before, i know that there was an elements in our smartphone but only in battery and the electronics but now after reading this article i was amazed that even the touchscreen and the casing are also having some elements. Our batteries contain lithium cobalt oxide while the electronics of our phones are using copper, solver, gold, tantalum and many more that are used to build chips, semi conductors, vibration unit and others. I was also amazed that inside the screen there were also some elements used that will produced a different variety of colors. Smartphones are widely used all over the world because of its easy to use, it can be hand carried so you can bring anywhere you want, plus, you can easily access sites without having to use computer or laptop. I was amazed when I learned that for every million cellphones manufactured and processed, there are more than 17 tons of copper and a whooping 1/3 of a ton of silver can be recovered. Not just copper and silver, but many more precious chemical elements that can be found in periodic table can also be found inside our smartphones too. I can say that chemistry plays a big role in technology. It amazes me that there are 70 out of the 83 elements on the periodic table that can be found inside our smartphones.
According to the article, smartphones are now everywhere. We can basically research anything and everything. Smartphones are like periodic table beacuse it contains chemical elements from the parts. The circuit boards in cell phones contain myriad toxins such as arsenic, antimony, beryllium, cadmium, copper, lead, nickel, and zinc.
Brominated flame retardants are found in the plastic housing, printed wiring board, and cables.
The lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride batteries contain heavy metals such as cobalt, zinc, and copper.
Many of these chemicals are Persistent Bioaccumulative Toxins (PBTs) and have the potential to be released into the air and groundwater when burned in incinerators or disposed of in landfills, thus creating unnecessary threats to human health and the environment
Most phone use lithium ion batteries that contains lithium cobalt oxide as a positive electrode.Lithium ion batteries are lighter than the others baecause the electrodes are constructed of lightwieght lithium and carbon.Copper, Silver, Gold, Tantalum, Copper, Silver, and Gold are utilized for wiring, while copper, gold, and silver are made into miniaturized scale electrical parts. Tantalum is utilized as a fundamental part for smaller scale capacitors Nickel, Dysprosium, Praseodymium, Terbium, Neodymium, Gadolinium, Nickel is found in the mouthpieces and other electrical associations . Neodymium, Gadolinium and Praseodymium are utilized in the magnets which are found in the speaker and amplifier Terbium, Neodymium and Dysprosium are found in the vibration unit. Silicon, Oxygen, Antimony, Arsenic, Phosphorus, Gallium. Silicon is made into the chip in the telephone and presented to Oxygen and warmth. It makes a layer of silicon dioxide superficially. These bits of the layer will be taken off to permit a flow of power to stream. Silicon can't direct power without different components . There are various semiconductors for each unique component that is utilized . The Tin and Lead are being utilized to weld the hardware and chip sorts out. Presently days they utilize a mix of tin, silver, and copper as a lead free substitution and this is the components use in the electronics.

I can believe that a phone i am holding right now contained some chemicals in periodic table i thought it was just compose of metal, and rubber and plastic and also some wires, and they use a ton of chemicals like for coppee was about 70, and they recycle it with e-waste.And maybe the reason why phones are quite tough in a matter of physical. This information was so overrated it explains why phones are operated and since we used it like everyday we didnt even wonder how it made and operate but now i know.Chemistry does impacts so great to us because in simple chemical can make a technology we're holding right now or even in the near future.

In our generation today we always use our smartphones. But didn't we know that there are a lot of pieces that complete a smartphone. The chemistry of a smartphone. 70 out of the 83 elements on the periodic table that can be found in your smartphone. Smartphones may contain up to 62 different types of metals. Rare earth metals such as scandium, yttrium, and elements 57-71. The battery and the electronics of a smartphone has chemistry in it. The battery. It uses lithium ion batteries. These batteries contain lithium cobalt oxide as the positive electrode. Lithium-ion batteries are lighter than most rechargeable batteries. The electronics. The elements that are used are Copper, Silver, Gold, Tantalum, Copper, Silver, and Gold are used for wiring, whilst copper, gold, and silver are made into micro electrical components.
In conclusion, smartphone is a complex gadget that we use everyday. And it gets more complex when the technological advancement increases.
Chemistry might is certainly not easy. People do not often see the importance it has in our life. But this article proves that just because we can not understand something, it is not important. It contains a lot of elements in periodic table to help the smartphone to be build and work, thus smartphones help us to our daily tasks it is still hazardous in some ways, example of this is its battery, it may explode due to the miss use of it because some elements react on over heating of the battery. We should more careful on using our smartphones for us to be safe.

I thought that there was no connection of making smartphones with chemistry, who would have thought about it,right? The more shocking parts are that there were many metals from periodic table that were used in making the electronic devices. And it was mentioned that some of the metals that were used are rare and it could be ran out because of too many uses of the rate metals. If the manufacturer would not control tha demands I am afraid that the metals would be gone. If one device consist seventeen up to eighty kinds of metals for example the most common are gold, silver, copper and so on we must have an alternative or reduces the use of it.

It is very amazing and amusing at the same time to know that there are many elements in a smartphones. I now know that there are various of metals inside a smartphone. It is also very cool to know what is behind the glass of a touchscreen because i have always wondered how it works no i know but it is also sad that we are using gold silvers and other precious materials to make smartphones. Nowadays, most of us use their smartphones for like, literally everything. Smartphones are mobile phones that performs many functions of the computer, typically having a touchscreen interface, Internet access, and an operating system capable of running downloaded applications. But how does smartphones really work? All in all, we can say that smartphones are made by chemistry. Simply because of the batteries, which most of the phones nowadays uses Lithium-Ion. The Electronics, including copper, silver, gold, etc, which are the main components of the phone itself. The screen or touchscreen, which is also composed of different elements, and have different types. And the display, which is composed of solid substances, such as glass, ceramics, and crystallines. Also, according to chemistry, there are 70 out of 80 elements on the periodic table that can be found on your smartphones. So by that, we can say that smartphones do really help us, smartphones is made from chemistry, and can evolve by the time that we gather more materials to improve that technology.

I never knew that smartphones have a lot of elements in it. Though those elements may not be in their original form the materials used to create smartphones still contain various elements inside it. Every element has its own unique way in activating, producting, showing its function in a smartphone. Some help conceal, some help transfer, some to expose, some helps explotion and many more. The article also shows that chemistry has a major participation in the evolution of smartphones. The article said that chemistry can be seen in a smartphone simply at its touchscreen for it has many elemnts are used to produce and showcase a specific color in the screen. On the inside of a battery pack you will find lithium ion cells which look an awful lot like AA battery cells unless you get a square or rectangular battery cell.
When the battery charges the ions of lithium move through the electrolyte towards the negative electrode from the positive electrode.

So let's talk about elements inside of a smartphone. Our smartphones is just a tiny electronic device that u can interact by using touch screen. Compare it to computer it has a lot benefits than computer because it is handy and reliable. We didn't know that our smartphone is full of elements even though it's just a small electronic device. By inventing this kind of electronic, many people enjoyed and they said it was very comfortable to use than computers. let's explore the elements inside of our phones. Our phone case consists of Aluminum,Silver, and Gold because our phone needs metal cover to protect what's inside of it. Inside of our phone the best conductor the copper and for battery lithium-ion. those elements are just the 30% only of what elements inside of our phone. but we also need to alarmed because of natural resources are slowly decreasing and we need to slowly produce phones. Recovering some materials to make phones in e-waste is the good source of producing phones nowadays to also help our ecosystem to lessen the pollution.
It’s hard to believe how many precious metals go into the electronics we use everyday and It's also deeply worrying to see how many elements, including those that make up mobile phones, are on the endangered list.

A younger me wondering "how this thing works" then the answers are now in front of me. It discussed from the very basic part of the phone up to the most complicated ones. I know that it contains metals like copper and gold that can be found in its processing unit but I was surprised to the fact that more than a half of metals in table is here. Today's technology is very advanced that you can do such things by the use of just "one" touch using a gadget that is made up of elements in periodic table. I support the idea of "recycling" e-wastes because there are elements that are limited. What if humans disposed the things that can be used again, no one knows if one day the materials to create a "gadget" were no longer be available in our planet
Details on the elements and compounds involved in the manufacture of touch screens were in fact the easiest to track down. These are manufactured mainly from aluminosilicate glass, a mixture of aluminium oxide and silicon dioxide, which is then placed in a hot bath of molten salt. The purpose of this is to allow smaller sodium ions to leave the glass and larger potassium ions to take their place; these take up more room and are pressed together when the glass cools, producing a layer of compressive stress on the glass and increasing its strength and resistance to mechanical damage.

Smartphones may be a small or tiny device but very helpful nowadays for us humans, we all know that we are living in a world that full of technologies like smartphones, but alot of us don't know what elements are inside of it. One smartphone consists many parts and every parts of them are made of elements like its battery, screens, etc., there are 70 out of 83 elements can be found in a smartphone, each of it has its own functions and purpose. Each elements are very useful because without those elements our gadgets of smartphones are impossible to work.
What is inside of our phone? We people didn't really care what is really inside of our phone or how it really works. What are the elements inside of our electronics that we are using everyday? by reading this article, I learned that those electronics that we used everyday contains precious metals. Especially for our cellphones, there are precious metals being used like gold and palladium. The rare earth metals may possibly run out of supply due to our thirst for high- tech colourful gadgets, these rare elements have become the big business and to have sparked and will make them inspired to start-up and launching. That is why cellphone companies will be focused in mining for these metals. Every parts of smartphone has elements, the battery, the screen, the electronics, and the casing. The most used of phone is lithium ion batteries.(Mark Cyruss Llose)
ReplyDeleteFor what I read, Smartphones and other devices has a lot of elements into it, every part of the devices has an equivalent elements that can found on earth whether if it is rare or not.
ReplyDeleteHumans should to be responsible in handling and using of those elements. So that in the future there is no scarce in every materials and resources.
Now that i know that 85% of chemical you found in periodic table is now in your mobile phones i must admit that when using a cellpphone yuo need to be more conscious and be a disciplined person and you need to be a moderation when using mobile phones now that our generation is more on technologies.
They were incredibly sensitive to high temperatures, because heat causes the battery packs decompose more quickly. The battery pack can come in any shape or size and has an aluminum casing containing three long thin layer spirals. The Touchscreen Technology Chemistry is very broad and vast, all of these are completely submerged in an organic solvent where they collaborate and keep electricity. As the device will be totally ruined and you will no longer be able to use it. I realized that it’s wrong to use your phone while charging because there’s a tendency to explode if the battery pack fails.

Science is a very beneficial to us. It may be hard to identify diff. Kinds of elements but the thing is this element can make a vast of new ideas. Just like the screen of phones when you touch the screen it will sharply enter what youve been touch. I am very amazed because i didnt know that there are 70 out of 83 elements inside a smartphone. Technology has been taking over the modern world of people where it is used wherever you go. People has been more and more technology dependent specially that it makes their lifestyle more efficient. But technology won’t evolve without chemistry specially to smartphones. No wonder it’s called smart because it really has special elements inside it. The continuous growth of smartphones and the mining of companies to get these elements every single day is so concerning specially that it need a lot of it and it could be gone someday. Everyone should just hope that there could be an alternative invention for making smartphones in the future to save mother earth.
I think that e-waste is one of the most common cause of pulution. The high demand of new smartphones is causing rare metals to exhaust. With the evolution of technologies means the needs of more supplies in rare mentals. Companies should think of solutions in the near exhaustion of rare metals.
ReplyDeleteThere are plenty of elements that a single smartphone has. For example its battery, containing a lithium cobalt oxide that people should avoid over using it until its dead because it can ruined and can never used it again. On the other hand, you can touch the screen because of its electrical charge that connects with the screen's charge.

Our cellphones contains rare earth metals to work like copper. Phones are using lithium batteries that helps the people of the earth because it is a good quality battery , there are studies that almost the population of the earth is using cellphones or smartphones. If the reaserchers didn't solve this issue the resources of rare metals in Earth will be limited and we humans will be affected by this issue.

So we can upgrade smartphone to avoid diseases in the chemical.
My phone is getting old but in this article showed that the phones has some significant features and structures. I would describe my phone as element Ag (Silver) because it has a silver-looking texture and it means rich and wealth. I hope the other elements inside my phone can still handle it because its not going to function if its not maintained properly.

I think that people should realize that they can somehow make their phones last longer so that not everybody is going to buy a phone after breaking it because the rare type of metal being use if somehow there is no more of this kind of metals their might be no technology that is going to last in the world

I can't believe that our cell phones is made up of different types of metals, 70 out of 83 elements in our periodic table and includes the rare materials that cannot easily found but it's a little bit dangerous if we are continously use this rare materials for just our sake and not to use to other important things it maybe disappear. This generation is awesome because we have a lot of technology can be use to ease our lives. Smartphones some says that "we cannot live without cell phones" thats is true this technology is very important to us we can communicate we having fun and a lot things to do. The smartphones we use today is much powerful to do anything related to work, school, and something else. Today, smartphones is durable and compact since they have the cameras and batteries that can last long for a whole day. Smartphones today contains many elements and with that, smartphones also has chemistry. It has chemistry on terms on its screen, batteries, cameras to work perfectly fine and good for everyday use. I just recommend is not to waste too much elements on a single phone. We should recycle old phones and get some parts on them to make a new phone. The seemingly endless abilities of smartphones as communication tools, personal organizers and entertainment devices are possible because of amazing properties held by the elements within a smartphone.
ReplyDeleteThey contain dozens of elements in compounds, metals and composites produced from minerals to form the building blocks of smartphones. This symphony of electronics and chemistry gives smartphone users the ability to talk, text, view, swipe, share, post, tweet, and connect with the world.
Because of their worldwide communication ability and their multinational ingredient list, smartphones truly are global devices. However, with minerals being sourced from all over the world, the possibility of supply disruption is more critical than ever.
Therefore, governments and businesses should continue to monitor the world supply of the valuable minerals that make technology like smartphones possible, because these high tech devices have become mainstays for billions of people around the globe.
As the technology of smartphones continues to evolve, the elements and source minerals used to make these devices will always be a key factor in their growing and amazing capabilities.

It is good to know that periodic table elements is one of the components that is inside our mobile devices. Periodic table elements are useful in our mobiles phones or any other type of device. Many elements included and our devices such as a lithium ion battery. The majority of today’s phones use lithium ion batteries. These batteries tend to use lithium cobalt oxide as the positive electrode in the battery (though other transition metals are sometimes used in place of cobalt), whilst the negative electrode is formed from carbon in the form of graphite. It will also have an organic solvent to act as the electrolytic fluid. The lithium in the positive electrode is ionised during charging of the battery, and moves into the layers of the graphite electrode. During discharge, the ions move back to the positive electrode. The battery itself is usually housed in an aluminium casing.

Most of us give no thought to the materials that make modern life possible. Yet technologies such as smart phones, electric vehicles, large screen TVs and green energy generation depend on a range of chemical elements that most people have never heard of. Until the late 20th century, many were regarded as mere curiosities – but now they are essential. In fact, a mobile phone contains over a third of the elements in the periodic table.
As more people want access to these technologies, the demand for the critical elements is growing. But supply is subject to a range of political, economic and geological factors, creating volatile prices as well as large potential gains. This makes investment in mining these metals a risky business. Below are just a few examples of the elements we have come to rely on that have seen sharp price rises (and some falls) in the last few years.
Every components of a smartphone has came from the periodic table of elements which contains a lot of metals that are put inside the device. The electronic part elements that are used are Copper, Silver, Gold, Tantalum, Copper, Silver, and Gold are used for wiring, whilst copper, gold, and silver are made into micro electrical components. It is said that we must avoid over using our phone due to its heat because it can easily destroy a phones battery. It just explains all the elements that a smartphones has on its part
ReplyDeleteI was kind of surprised that our smartphones contain a lot of components and elements from the periodic table such silver and gold; lithium for the batteries; praseodymium, terbium, yttrium and gadolinium for the screen; etc., and all of them are important for those devices to work.
ReplyDeleteNo wonder why iPhones are expensive, for it contain lots of rare-earth metals and elements.

I just found out that it's really bad to change a cellphone every year even though the more expensive your cellphone is, the worse it can be for yourself.

Because of the smartphone that is being made we might lose some major resources like rare earth metals. It might run out of supply due to our thirst for high-tech colourful glowy gadgets. The gadgets that we use contain more than 17 tons of copper and a whooping 1/3 of a ton of silver can be recovered from e-waste, in addition to the other precious metals being used like gold and palladium. The quick development of the market for cell phones from other brands like Samsung, Lenovo, Asus, Sony and Nokia adds to the concern. Thus, we can be certain that the chemistry of cell phones will just turn out to be progressively mind boggling as cutting edge materials and innovation progressively discover their ways into our hands.

ReplyDeleteSmartphones are owned by most of the people now. And that smartphone companies like Apple produce millions of phone. I’m aware that our phone has many elements in it such as copper and silver. But I’m surprised that these elements may be scarce. More that 70-80 elements are of periodic table that can be seen our phones.
I qas really surprised to know that there are such chemicla elements in the gadgets that we occasionally used most of the time. I'm really amezed taht the developers of highly new technologies will be able to manufacture a productbthat consists of different chemicals in it. However, its still negative effects to the users because it can be the reason itsmore likelyto explode as the different chemicals in it react. As a student, I literally wanted to inform this with other people because its not just the radiation can be harm but also the technology itself because of its content which are the material used when its made
